Thai lottery is the official national lottery of Thailand that administrated by the Government lottery office itself. There are only two forms of legalized gambling permitted in Thailand. One is Thai lottery and the other is horse riding in Bangkok.
It is the most popular legal form of gambling in Thailand despite of its low payout ratio as compared to the famous lotteries of other countries.
Family Network Foundation’s Secretary named Wanchai Boonpracha said that:
Around 19.2 of 67 million Thais played the government lottery by spending 76 billion baht (US$2.3 billion) in 2014.
Normally government only licenses and monitors the lottery business but the Thai Government Lottery Office aka GLO prints and sell the lottery tickets to wholesalers.
The Thailand Lottery aka Thai Lottery timeline starts back in 1874 during the reign of King Rama V (1868-1910) when a lottery was run during the Kings anniversary celebrations. On the birthday of his Royal bodyguard in 1874, the King allowed him to operate the lottery. After that lottery becomes the regular income source for the government and it was continued till 1933.
At several other times between 1874 and 1939 special lotteries were held to finance different schemes including Thailand’s involvement in WWI, Red Cross charity funding and to generate revenue for the Thai government when there were funding shortfalls.
By 1939, the control of government lottery operation was formally transferred to the Thai Ministry of Finance with the appointment of the first lottery board by the Ministry of Finance on April 5, 1939. This date is now considered to be the founding date of the official Thai Lottery and the Government Lottery Office.
Over the passing the years the price of a lottery ticket has increased gradually from one baht to its present official price that is 80 baht. A good news is that when the military government took power in May 2014. And on 16 June 2015, they decided to take lottery program to next level and announced that the ticket will not exceed 80 baht as this is the official price of government lottery.
The current format of the lottery sees many millions of tickets(exact number unclear) issued for each of the bi-monthly draws which includes specific sections to promote both sport and charities.
Each year, the Lottery Office contributes a significant amount to the government treasury. It also provides scholarships for undergraduates and supports various charities. The Thai lottery also contributes to the welfare funds for civil service and military personal.

How to Play Thailand Lottery As a Beginner
Playing the Thai lottery is easy although it currently based on the paper(there are plans to make it electronic). You have to purchase a ticket from an official agent or vendor in Thailand. Usually, the Thai Lottery draw held twice a month on the 1st and 16th day. You will find vendors and agents all across Thailand in every town and village.
There are two types of Thai lottery tickets. That originally issued by Government Lottery Office. The first is the Thai Government Lottery (TGL) ticket. The second is the Thai Charity Lottery(TCL) ticket.
The titles for both tickets printed at the upper left side. Both tickets have different names but the major difference is in their prize money and the amount of tax that is paid on winnings.
TGL tickets have a first prize of three million baht. A bonus prize of 30 million* and the tax is 0.5%. TCL tickets have a first prize of three million baht, a bonus prize of 22 million*, and the tax is 1%.
- Bonus prize eliminated by the military government after 1 Aug 2015.
Both Thai lottery tickets, whether TGL or TCL, are pre-printed and comes with a number of anti-counterfeiting features. These tickets can only be purchased in “ticket-pairs”. Each individual ticket priced at 40 baht, and the ticket-pair at 80 baht. Single tickets did not sold and also single ticket had no issue or you cannot claim your prize after winning.
Each ticket in a ticket-pair is identical except for:
- The pictograms (centre of each ticket)
- Bar codes (lower right)
- Unit (Thai: ชุด, RTGS: chut) numbers (2-digit numbers, lower centre. In the examples shown, “09” and “10”, and “81”, “82”). A “unit” consists of one million 40 baht tickets. Published prize amounts are honored if the unit sells out. If it does not, prizes are reduced proportionately.
On the verso of each ticket is the schedule of prizes, ancillary information, and conditions.
Thai Lotto Tickets Explained
As you can see in the image, the lottery tickets comes with the standard pack of two. For most of the drawings, all that matters is the six digit number. If you draw that number in exact order you will win prizes the prize for that draw.
The reason behind two additional double-digit numbers on the ticket?
The bottom number indicates what type of ticket it is. As of the time I’m writing this article, there are two different jackpots.
For certain batches the top prizes are:
- 3 million baht for all correct
- 20 million baht for all correct + 2 digit bonus (0-99) number correct.
For the other batches the top prizes are:
- 2 million baht for all correct
- 30 million baht for all correct + 2 digit bonus (0-99) number correct.
Now the interesting thing is the same six-digit number that varies from 0-9 per slog applies to both main lucky draws. In case if you get the exact match, you should verify by seeing the back side of your ticket either the prize is 2 million or 3 million baht. From here there is an extra number (multiplier) to draw separately (0-99) for each.
You will get 30 million baht as a prize but the condition is you must have the 2 million baht paying ticket. And also have two digit number drawn for it matches. You hold two tickets that’s why you will get 30 million + 2 million baht.
Same criteria go for 3 million paying ticket. If you match the extra number then you will get 20 million more for that portion of your ticket.
No matter which type of ticket you hold if you are one number off in either direction (for example if 223454 is the draw then 223453 and 223455 are 1 number off) you win a consolation prize of 50,000 baht. As you have two identical tickets you actually win 100,000 baht.
Where to Buy Thai Lottery Tickets?
Thailand lottery tickets already printed by the GLO. Lottery vendors are roaming in the market, streets and villages. We can see them in front of the big shops such as Tesco Lotus and Big C.
The official price of the lottery ticket is 40 baht. But these tickets are sold in packs of two, so it is only possible to buy two tickets at 80 baht. The two half’s of the ticket shows the same number top and bottom.
You cannot split the tickets but if you win you get double the first prize money. Agents/Sellers add a fee so you can pay as much as 120 Baht for your ticket. This is very common in Thailand, sometimes different sellers charge different prices.
The original price of the two tickets is 40+40=80 baht. But the asking price by the different street vendors might be 120-130 baht for both tickets. Vendors standing outside the big shops normally charge 100 baht.
Amazing thing is that sometimes prices vary by ticket numbers. Like common numbers cost less (85, 90 and 95 baht). On the other hand, the tickets with the lucky Buddhist number cost more.
Each Thai Lottery ticket has a unique number consisting of 6 single digits using the figures 0-9.
How to Identify Fake Lottery Tickets?
Let’s talk about how you can identify a fake lottery ticket. Unfortunately, there are clever vendors who will try to sell fake Thai lottery tickets to new lottery players. Local Thai people can easily identify the fake lottery tickets but the new one or foreigner cannot do so and they easily looted by the sellers. Here are some steps that you can follow to identify fake tickets.
A fake ticket has the following properties:
- Low quality or different paper as compared to the original lottery ticket.
- Different color from the original.
- No official watermark by the lottery office.
Follow these simple steps to buy a lottery ticket:
- Never buy a ticket from a new seller or a stranger.
- Simply walk away, in case if you have any doubts about the ticket.
- Always buy tickets from a trusted local seller.
- Investigate from local people before buying the lottery ticket.
- Have a look at a genuine ticket so that you know what to look for.
- Never pay more than 120 Baht for lottery tickets.
Note: Usually, you can buy a ticket in 100 Baht from a vendor. It is also not realistic to expect to pay only the actual cost of these tickets (80 Baht). As the vendors have to make a profit. It has seen that they have not paid by the lottery office directly.
Some remarkable changes made by the GLO to avoid fake lottery tickets scams. Like they introduce an anti-counterfeiting system to overcome scams issue. By increasing the clarity of the watermark on the paper to be able to see with the naked eye more clearly, adding a 2D barcode system that can scan the lottery, barcode reader Considered to help detect counterfeiting of lottery numbers Or lottery to solve the initial number as well.
How to Ensure the Authenticity of a Winning Ticket?
- Numbers: It is the numbers that specify on the ticket.
- Verified Numbers: It is for machine to check the authenticity and prove to pay the prize.
- Barcode: It is for computer or machine to check the numbers and authenticity of the ticket. Each ticket has unique barcode.

How to Check the Barcode Yourself?
- The color of paper or ticket is closed to yellow, thin and smooth.
- When hold the paper against the light, the watermark (A fabulous bird –Wayupak) will appear explicitly.
- There are 2 types of silk thread in the paper. One is able to see by your own eyes and the other one could not and need the ultra-violet light in order to illuminate and see the silk thread.
- The paper is coated with chemicals. To test the paper, it can be by bleaching with Benzene or Haiter. If drop those on the printed paper for tickets, the blot and stain will be in sight and it will not appear if it is not the coated paper.
